James R. Spear, PhD, Geophysicist

jimspearsportraitJames R. Spear, PhD., of Houston, Texas. Dr. Spear has 30 years of both international and domestic oil industry experience with majors, independents, and service companies. This experience includes work as a seismic processor, seismic interpreter, geologist, mud logger, exploration manager, president of a consulting firm for geophysical and geological exploration, geophysical manager and as a certified Landmark Graphics instructor.

Dr. Spear has a proven track record of more than 500 wells successfully drilled over his career. Dr. Spear has worked with both 2D and 3D seismic processing and interpretation. He has done basinal studies in geographic locations spanning globally more than forty basins on five continents, with particular emphasis involving basins in Mexico, Andean sub-basins of South America and Gulf Coast basins – in particular, South Texas Burgos Basin. He has worked onshore and offshore basins throughout Latin America, Europe, Africa, Southeast Asia and the Gulf of Mexico, both on shelf and deepwater.

Dr. Spear has professional memberships in the Society of Exploration Geophysicists (SEG), American Association of Petroleum Geologists (AAPG), Geological Society of America (GSA), Houston Geological Society (HGS) and the Union of South American Geophysicists.

Dr. Spear has undergraduate degrees in mathematics and physics from the University of Delaware in Newark, Delaware. During active duty with the U.S. Air Force, he completed the two-year Masters degree program in Atmospheric Physics at The College of William and Mary (and VARC). He also holds a Masters degree in Geology and Geophysics and a PhD. in Geophysics from The South Dakota School of Mines, Rapid City, South Dakota.
